yes. there are different kinds in the market. but the best way to peel garlic is to whack it with the blade of the knife and peel easily. some advice that you can microwave the garlic clove and it will peel easily.

Have tried both ways with the garlic...If you're making a paste, then the micro method's fine, But if you want to chop the garlic it's better to bash it with a broad-bladed knife.

I once saw a very interesting tool for peeling garlic

Just take 1 inch dia rubber pipe, about 6 inches long (soft rubber). Put the garlic pods inside and roll them with your hand on a table. the pods peel up come out!

The one I saw also had small ribs on the inside of the pipe.

Yes Chanchal, it's like a cycle tube. I have this one and good 4 peeling garlic.

Another method, besides zapping in the micro is - Rub some cooking oil in ur palms and then rub the garlic pods in ur hand. This way, they get coated with oil. Spread on a flat tray and keep in the sun 4 an hr or 2. With the heat, the peels become a bit brittle and crisp and peel off easily.

The tube garlic peeler somehow did`nt work with me as i found the garlic got a bit crushed.Thought it might loose its essence(the garlic that is). Also had to put few cloves at a time otherwise all the skin would`nt come undone.Maybe i rubbed it the wrong way ? :))
Other interesting gadget is the rabdi maker. It is a dish with spiral ridge on its top ending with a hole. As the milk boils the steam comes out of the hole moving the dish all over the pan in a stirring action. Thus preventing the milk from overflowing and mainly from sticking at the bottom and getting burnt. Very useful ofcourse if you dare make and EAT rabdi.

Hey Swati,

This Rabdi maker, sounds interesting ................ Never heard or seen such a thing. Besides Rabdi making, what else can u put it 2 use for?

In the garlic peeler, u should put a few pods only. Then press it and apply a little pressure with the base of ur palm and push ur hand up and down. It peels off easily.

Anisa,
The rabdi-maker - sounds like something my mom uses. It was supposed to be a milk boiler, but they use it to cook rice. Pretty good stuff. It's electrical, bought in Chennai. I'll check with mom and get back asap.
Cheers!

Folks,
Those who were interested in the Rabdi maker/rice cooker/soup stewer - it's made/marketed by Citizen Home Appliances. They have containers of two capacities.

Chennai contact - 044-65697988 - shop near Gowdia Mutt, Royapettah

Do check with the rep if it indeed does all the wonderful things we think it does ;-)

Cheers!
