Vanita you have brought back some very fond memories of late 70s-ealy 80s when I was at NDA and later at Lonavala. Cafe Naaz used to be my favourite haunt, and I used to specially like their mutton samosas (though it took some time for my punjabi pride to accept the miniature version). BUN-MASKA in the morning and keema bun in the evening. Those were the days of influx of Iranis' to pune, and my fair and stiff appearence used to get me a number of pecks on the cheek (mistaken identity I guess). In fact Naaz was a hangout joint for Jawa/ Yezdi fans, and I learnt a lot of biking there.
Aurora towers was then Westend theatre, and their soda fountain was another favourite joint. And then the cold coffee and choclate balls at Marzorin, lemon lassi at the other end of MG road at Farmer brothers. A few tipplers at RSI, and we used to head straight for Lucky's biryani at Deccan Gymkhana.
I miss Pune

Not only the omlettes, but the toast butter at Vohuman Cafe outside Jehangir Hosp', are to die for. You get three slices of toast, with the butter dripping through the layers right down to the last.........heaven!!!!! its just toast and butter but its heavenly :)
And outside Bund garden was Anna's bhel. Very different from the bhel in Mumbai- it has gathia and phaphda in it, but its yummy.

Agree with you rhea on the toast butter at wohman cafe. Forgot abt that. Some haunts in the old city area;

Misal at Shree Upahar Gruha. (this has a homely touch)

Mutton at nagpuri in sadshiv peth

Misal at Ramnath on Tilak Road (this is really fiery)

Purohit sweets in Bohori Ali

Lasun Chatni and Pav at Girija on tilak road.

Camp side

Pani Puri wala near mandir & also the one opposite Babajan High school.

India Ice cream candies

Jaws. Alas this place is history now but if anyone has experience of the whole atmosphere of this palce, they will have very fond memories of them. The carrom playing, TT and the open air small musical concerts. This place was really good. Decent burngers too.

Anyone on sinhagad food guide? Maralbai and Balu near Dev taka are my favourites.

Hey this one's for u CNB. If u r in pune. Go to TO i.e. Thousand Oaks on East Street. Once there, you need to try his barman's pitcher its really good. Also try his lasooni kebabs and Ghost Masala Taka Tak.

The best thing about this place is different sections. You have garden at the entrance, a dining section in between and the Pub Den and Bar at the end. Choose the place you want and you will get your volume of music accordingly.

Atul,

I have been to this place about 2 or 3 years ago in the inside section. I stuck to Old Monk though. I _have_ heard a lot about the barman's pitcher though. So maybe if I can get my client to head there today instead of the standard Kapila.

Are you in town and willing to join? Or are you about to give the standard wife excuse?

Talking of rolls, you haven't had anything if you haven't had the double egg-mutton roll in Kolkata. No roll is equal to those made in Kolkata, including the rumali kabab rolls of Delhi.

George opposite Aurora Towers.

If u wanna have some beer and nice tit bits to eat during the lunch hour, nothing beats Diamond on MG road.

Shifa in Rasta Peth for late night food. Dalcha Chawal is good. (Don't know if its open still)

Anybody here been to Swiss Cheese Garden at ABC farms? Fondues are really good.

Also there was a place called Mala Tofu in ABC farms which used to serve real good tibetian / chinese food. I guess its closed now.

There was a time during school days when Pattice at Hindustan bakery was a treat for sunday mornings and people use to que for this. Also Patti samosa from Green Bakery.

But these days they put too much of oil and due to an incidence about 3 yrs back they are shut after 12:30 - 1 am.

I just remembered Shahji's Paratha house - Laxmi road - near the Dulya maruti / Alpana theatre end. His challenge is that if you eat three of his parathas, he gives you rickshaw money to go home ;) - CNB please to try and tell me - I haven't been there.

Also, detailed locations of: Hotel Kaveri - MarketYard entrance is a big gate - to it's left is a small truck parking yard - behind it is a line of shops - Hotel Kaveri no 2. is the last shop - alternatively the line of shops is also accessible from the main road opposite the large marriage hall on that road

Calcutta boarding house - JMRoad, from Sambhaji garden go towards Shivajinagar. Before Modern high school - you can't miss it - right next to where there used to be a petrol pump. roughly opposite medinova.

Fondues at Swiss Cheese Garden!!!! Brings back the memories of my 2yr stay in Pune. The Fondues are just superb.

Other places I loved were Pizzeria opp Holiday Inn. There was this restaurant called Zaika and they had the Kabab offers. For Rs. 299, you get Beer, Kababs, Roti, Daal, Biryani and Desserts. Food was excellent too. This too was opposite Holiday Inn

Zamus and Nandus were always the joints for all of us as we lived in Kalyani Nagar where good food was a rarity then.

Out to impress women, then the place would be La Dolce Vita, next to Mainland China, just before Zamus. One of the best Italian Restaurants in India. The pastas were the perfect mix of herbs. Made terrific Arabiata, Penne with chicken and wine in white peppery sauce. Good Tiramisu and Maceadonia as desserts.

Thousand Oaks, Kapila, Ten Downing Street (apart from being a pub, they had a good lunch buffet), Malakka Spice, Prems, Shatranj at Koregaon Park (Garden Restaurant) were other favoured hangouts.

For fancy food, the best place in Pune without doubt (for me) is Arthur's Theme, Koregaon Park, turn at the Pizza Hut corner. The food is awesome, the servings really good and the prices are expensive (by Pune stds) but reasonable by Bombay standards. basically what we call Continental food, excellent service, very friendly but discreet waiters, and as I said, gorgeous food. Never been disappointed. Try the duck or the turkey. This is one of the few places that has these on the menu.

Wow.. that's an impressive list .. and quite comrehensive too.
And a wonderful nostalgic trip for a former Punekar.

Only additional joints I can think of right now are :

- Dorabjee's Restaurant ... further down the same road Eddie's Kitchen used to be (I think) - for biryani
- Janseva on Laxmi Road - fabulous sabudana khichdi and other Maharashtrian snacks ... and heavy doses of Puneri 'ATTITUDE'
- Y-point and Aniket canteens in Pune University campus - basic food - tea and vada-pav are perfect for evenings in the Univ campus.

Some of the rocking Pune places -

- Marzorin for awesome sandwiches, milkshakes
- Bhelwala at Bund Garden
- JAWS burgers (my all time favorite) now closed :(( Now Burger King has taken over
- Wada pav on Tilak Rd
- Dahi Misal near SP College
- Prem's - good hang out, chilled beer
- Naaz - greasy irani keema samosas

The lesser knowns -
- Angraj (beyond Lulla Nagar) built like a cave; not sure if it's still around
- Arthur's theme - for steak (Koregaon Park)
- There also used to be a guy who sold amazing tandoori chicken from a cart on the way to Salunkhe Vihar
- And there was a river side open air restaurant, can't get the name
- And another place near Chandni Chowk, Pashan
- Chinese Room

Other favorites from Pune - bhakarwadi and amrakhand from Chitale, chiwda from Laxminarayan...

Surely forgetting a lot more...

my keyboard is wet with drool...

Malaka Spice
Well Halloa! ... to all us wonderful foodies hereabouts :-)

Read this thread and thought "Oooh Yeah!"

Pune's such an amazing melting pot of cuisine and we are glad to be part of it for the last 8 years... the traditional and the new, the regular and the exotic, the brash and the charming... all in at most 10 km of each other.

Our Malaka Spice team loves to hang out, at the Iranis: brun-maska-chai rocks! ... [ apart from Malaka Spice of course ;-) ]

And as for the Neera thelas... these summers are making us guzzle more neera than they can pour out before we say 'ek aur' :-)

Do drop by our place for some "UmM!" South East Asian cuisine... while you're taking in the sights and smells of Pune.

If you happen to hop by this week, you'll be able to catch our Satay Special too.

Here's to fine dining... Live to eat and enjoy!! :-)

Hi all,

doesnt look like anyone is interested in this event,as I havent had ONE single person pay up for it,

Its really disheartening to see this kind of poor response,

anyway if noone is interested, there isnt any point in going ahead with it.

If i dont see any enthusiasm, will cancel it this evening itself,

Kaveeta, don't rush to conclusions. Maybe the Comrade paying up rule will help in logistics.

People (like me) can't always meet the concerned person and pay up. So, by some deadline allow people to RSVP. Then order at the venue with number of 'Yes' respondents and a reasonable estimate from the 'Maybe's. If someone has RSVP'ed 'Yes' by the deadline - that person *has* to pay. Collection can be taken care of later. I though the current response is looking great.

Had been to pune in the beginning of the month...saw a whole host of new food places all over...
Infact the city itself has changed so drastically in the last couple of years, some parts are absolutely unrecognisable :(

Anyway, as far as eating out goes...
did the pilgrimage to Arthur's Theme...:P it was wonderful, as usual.
Tried out the KFC at a Mall called Neuclues (?) or something like that. Decent. Nothing to get highly excited about.

Ate Biryani at Blue Nile for the first time...it was quite good. I would definitely go back there!!

On my recent trip to Pune, ate at Zaheer Khan's restaurant (the one year old ZK's). Food tasted good but the place had a strange odour -- not very conducive to dining.

Blue Nile scores on the ambience (quaint Iranian kinda feel) and quality of grub, but its George Restaurant for me, for its smashing mutton biriyani, which I rate higher than Blue Nile's. While the ambience at George's is nothing to write home about, the service and VFM rocks.

just had biryani from George's after ages and ages...it was the most boring biryani ever. A few pieces of meat and a dry rice. nothing else. :(

Must thank all ye people for these great stops!:) Had shifted to Pune a year ago and have not really tried out too many places (unlike Mumbai)- but here are some of my faves (through the times I visited pune before shifting)...

* Malaka Spice (have gone there enough times but will still love to go there again)
* Dorabjee's (for everything...esp biryani)
* Kayani bakery (cakes to shrewsberry biscuits)
* German bakery (fun and food)
* Nandu's (awesome parathas)
* ABC Farms (for the variety in menu and decor)
* Soho (near ABC farms, in the lane opp Gold Adlabs- good food and nice chilled out place)
* Krishna Dining (Law college road- for maharashtrian thali)
* 24-carat (near Sharada Centre- the place has greattt food, esp typical maharastrian sea food!)
* Wadeshwar (for the rasam vada)
* Lucky (at Deccan's...rather was... It just got taken over by someone else... but amazing food and was the only place open even at 2am)

Now will try the others mentioned... Esp have been wanting to go to Blue Nile and Arthur's...heard a lot about them.
Happy Eating everybody!:)

During our recent visits to Poona, have tried 'Uppala Family Restaurant' on main Nagar Road, at Chandan Nagar. Initially you might get put off because of crowds standing ouside ( there is a paan walla there ). Plus a no fuss eatery, quite packed during lunch hours.
Food is good and reasonable, though lots of oil, but if you tell them beforehand then they are careful. Their Aloo Masala is quite good and a different taste. Chicken and Tandoori Rotis are good. The gravy of each dish is different and doesnt taste of the same masala. The Rotis are nice and soft. Have tried their Biryani too, that was also good. A veg dish, Chicken dish and 4 rotis cost about 100/- to 120/-

Another place is 'Polka Dots' at Kalyani Nagar, near Bishops School. Like their Continental food. Good food, large helpings, well made and reasonable -
Moussaka - quite authentic and well made and a big dish full - 175/-
Spanish Grilled Fish - well made and nice and light - 195/- Their Saltimboca Chicklen is also good. had tried it earlier.
